The J1-Student Visa for USA is mainly for work-and-study based visitor programs sponsored by an educational or other private institutions. J1-Visa Internship Program

The internship program is a perfect opportunity for international students to gain relevant experience in USA. It is mainly for students who have recently passed their Diploma, Advanced Diploma or other degrees (Completed 2 months before or less).

It features great skills to be learnt in fields related to cooking and hospitality. This paid internship program is like a summer program for international students since it lasts for a total duration of 6 months to a year. This program is more ideal for recent graduates.

Note: Interested applicants are recommended to apply for the visa 6 months prior to be prepared. All details about your course completion are required during the visa application.

Interns must be foreign nationals:

  • Who are currently enrolled in and pursuing studies at a foreign degree- or certificate-granting post-secondary academic institution outside the United States; or
  • Who have graduated from such an institution no more than 12 months prior to their exchange visitor program start date.

J-1 Intern Visa Overview

J1-Trainee Program

The Trainee Program is an exclusive skill training program that is meant for individuals who want to gain relevant experience in a selected field. It lasts for about 1 to 1.5 years and is often considered an advanced form of internship. Even students who have had a year gap in their education can apply for this type of trainee program.

The trainee program features basic skills and advanced skills to learn in a particular field, so generally people already involved in the field apply for this program, to gain more experience and exposure. The program however requires work experience before applying. High school graduates need 5 years of experience and university, or college graduates need at least 1 year of experience.

Target: General members of society
Training period: Up to 18 months (However, up to 12 months for hospitality-related jobs. Plus, you can stay for the purpose of traveling for 30 days before and after)
Training Area:  All over the United States (including Hawaii, Guam, and Alaska)

The programs in the visa are paid programs, so students are essentially earning money while gaining valuable experience. For international students, companies generally give the visa for training in skills related to cooking or hospitality, since the labor force in USA requires jobs involving these skills.
