GUARDIAN SERVICE

GUARDIAN SERVICE

Compulsory for all high school or under 18 years

The Australian Commonwealth government and schools require that all overseas students have a suitable guardian whilst enrolled.

Work Study can provide guardians for short term or long term. Guardians can also help parents concerns with the knowledge that someone is available to assist their son or daughter. The role of the guardian is a very important one and it is essential that appropriate people are chosen.

Guardians are required to:

  • Be an Australian permanent resident.

  • Be over 25 years of age.

  • Have a recent Australian Federal police clearance.

  • Provide a character reference from an Australian citizen.

  • Have a home easily accessible to the school.

  • Attend an interview at the school with the Principal or Head of Boarding before the student is accepted.

Responsibilities of the guardian

  • Keep in regular contact with the School and Homestay or Boarding House.

  • Liaise with school about accommodation, attendance, behaviour, health and progress of the student.

  • Maintain contact with the student.

  • Liaise with parents about accommodation, health issues, recreation/social activities, financial matters and discipline as required.

  • Be familiar with the roles of the boarding house, especially arrival and departure times.

  • Monitor the appropriate behaviour of the student at all times.

  • Support the good academic progress of the student.

  • Undertake to advise the school before 10am on any day that the student is unable to attend school because of illness or other circumstance and confirming the reason for absence with a handwritten note to be sent with the student when he / she returns to school.

  • Confirm any leave with the Head of Boarding prior to signing out students.

  • Organize accommodation for, care and supervision of the student during Weekend leaves, Mid-term long weekends or Term holidays, if required.

  • Notify the head of Boarding with any concerns regarding student leaves, weekends and the like.

  • Arrange and confirm with the boarding house all travel arrangements so that students arrive in time for the beginning of term and leave after the end of school for each term. Because of the pressure on airline seats at the start and conclusion of school terms, travel arrangement for the entire year should be made at the start of the year. Details should be given to the Head of Boarding.

  • Arrange transport to and from the airport, as appropriate.

  • Arrange accommodation if student is ill and requires to be isolated for medical reasons.

  • Notify the Head of Boarding if they will be away, so a temporary guardian can be appointed.
